How do I calculate what size heater my aquarium needs?
Start from your tank's volume, your target temperature, and your typical room temperature. A long-standing hobbyist approximation is around 5 watts per US gallon for roughly a 10°F (5.5°C) rise in a normally-heated room, then adjusted for a cooler room, a room against an external wall or an unheated space, and for the fact that smaller tanks lose heat faster per litre than larger ones. The calculator above applies this and returns a range, not a single figure, because real heat loss also depends on things like tank shape, lid, water movement and insulation.
What happens if my aquarium heater is too small?
An undersized heater may run continuously at full power and still fail to reach or hold your target temperature, especially during cold snaps or in a cooler room. This shows up as a temperature that drifts downward over time or never quite reaches the set point, which is a recognised stressor for many species.
What happens if my aquarium heater is too big?
A larger heater reaches its set temperature faster and cycles on and off more often. This isn't automatically dangerous with a working, accurate thermostat, but it raises the consequences of a thermostat fault or a heater sticking on: a very oversized heater can push a tank's temperature up quickly and by a larger margin before anyone notices, particularly in a smaller volume of water.
Do goldfish and other coldwater fish need a heater?
Usually not, if the tank is kept in a normally-heated home. Coldwater species are adapted to a wider natural temperature range than tropical fish, so typical room temperatures are often already suitable. A heater becomes more relevant in an unheated space or where the room temperature regularly drops well below the target range.
Why do some aquariums use two heaters instead of one?
Splitting the total wattage across two smaller heaters, usually at opposite ends of the tank, gives two practical benefits: if one heater fails, the tank doesn't lose all its heating capacity at once, and heat tends to distribute more evenly through the water. This becomes more commonly recommended as tank size or total wattage increases.
