There's no single best filter type — there's the type that matches your tank size, stocking, species and how much maintenance you actually want to do. A sponge filter is gentle and shrimp-safe but limited on capacity for a heavily stocked tank; a hang-on-back (HOB) filter is the versatile default for most community tanks; an internal filter suits a small or nano tank where external space is tight; a canister filter gives the most capacity and flexibility for a large or heavily stocked tank at the cost of more setup and maintenance. Mechanical, biological and chemical filtration

Sponge filters

A sponge filter uses an air pump or powerhead to draw water through a porous foam sponge, providing gentle mechanical and strong biological filtration with essentially no intake risk to small or delicate livestock. Choose a sponge filter when you're keeping shrimp, fry, or other species vulnerable to being pulled against a stronger intake; when you want a simple, inexpensive, easy-to-clean option for a quarantine or hospital tank; or as a supplementary filter alongside a HOB or canister for extra biological capacity and redundancy. The trade-off is capacity and flow: sponge filters generally suit smaller or lightly-to-moderately stocked tanks better than heavily stocked large ones, and don't offer chemical filtration on their own.

Hang-on-back (HOB) filters

A HOB filter hangs on the back of the tank, drawing water up through a media basket (typically combining mechanical, biological and optional chemical media) before returning it via a spillway. This is the versatile default for most freshwater and marine community tanks: straightforward to install and maintain, widely available in a range of flow rates, and simple to add a pre-filter sponge to for extra intake safety. Internal filters

An internal filter sits fully submerged inside the tank, combining a mechanical/biological media chamber with a small pump. Choose one when external space behind or above the tank is limited — a nano tank, a tank in a tight enclosure, or a setup where a HOB simply won't fit or would look intrusive. The trade-off is reduced media capacity relative to an external filter of similar footprint, and a visible presence inside the aquascape that some keepers prefer to avoid.

Canister filters

A canister filter sits outside the tank (often below it, in a cabinet) and pumps water through a sealed, multi-stage media canister before returning it, typically via a spray bar for wide, even flow distribution. Choose a canister filter for a large tank, a heavily stocked or messy-eating species, or when you want the largest practical media capacity and the most flexibility over media type and stage order. The trade-off is cost, more involved setup and priming, and more disassembly required for maintenance than a sponge or HOB — worth weighing against how much hands-on maintenance you actually want to take on, not just against the tank size on paper.

Shrimp, fry and high-flow species

Two opposite special cases are worth naming directly. Shrimp and fry need low intake risk above almost everything else — a sponge filter, or any other filter type with a pre-filter sponge fitted, is the safer default. Redundancy and running more than one filter

Running two filters on the same tank — commonly a sponge filter alongside a HOB or canister — is a genuinely common approach, not a sign the primary filter is inadequate. It adds redundancy, since one filter continues running biological filtration while the other is being cleaned or if one fails, and it can combine strengths, such as a gentle sponge filter protecting shrimp or fry alongside a HOB providing extra mechanical and chemical capacity for the rest of the tank.
