What filter turnover actually means — and what it doesn't
Turnover is one specific, narrow measurement: your filter's effective flow rate divided by your tank's volume, expressed as "times per hour". That's it. It doesn't measure water quality, and on its own it doesn't tell you whether your filtration is actually working well. Four related terms get used loosely in the hobby, and it's worth keeping them separate:
- Filter turnover — how much water passes through the filter itself per hour, relative to tank volume. What this calculator measures.
- Water circulation — how water actually moves around the whole tank, including corners, behind decor and along the substrate. A filter can turn water over quickly while large parts of the tank still barely move — this is why powerheads or circulation pumps are sometimes added even when filter turnover already looks adequate on paper.
- Biological filtration — the colony of nitrifying bacteria living on and in filter media (and elsewhere in the tank) that actually processes ammonia and nitrite. This depends on established, healthy media and time to mature, not on flow rate alone — see our nitrogen cycle guide.
- Mechanical filtration — physically trapping debris and particles as water passes through. This depends on the media type and how clean it is, and a clogged mechanical stage can quietly choke flow to the biological media behind it.
A high turnover rate is never proof that filtration is adequate, and a lower turnover rate is never automatically proof that it isn't. Established biological media, clean mechanical media, good flow distribution and appropriate stocking all matter alongside the raw turnover figure — turnover is one input, not a verdict.

Why advertised flow differs from real-world flow
A filter's box or manual figure is normally measured with no media installed and minimal resistance in the system — close to the best case the pump or impeller can achieve. Once it's running in your actual tank, several things reduce that figure, sometimes substantially:

These reflect widely repeated conventions from the fishkeeping hobby, not a scientific or manufacturer-issued standard — use them as a loose starting point alongside the guidance elsewhere on this page, not a number to hit exactly.
When more circulation makes more sense than a bigger filter
If parts of your tank feel stagnant, or debris keeps settling in the same spots, that's more often a circulation problem than a filter-sizing problem. A dedicated powerhead or circulation pump, or repositioning your existing outlet or spray bar, can improve water movement around the whole tank without changing your filter's turnover rate at all. Replacing or upsizing a filter mainly increases flow through the filter itself — it doesn't automatically fix flow that never reaches the far corners of the tank.
We're not suggesting you need extra equipment by default. Most established, appropriately stocked tanks with a filter matched to their size don't need anything added — this is only worth considering if you're actually seeing one of the signs below.
Signs that filtration is worth reassessing
None of these are diagnoses on their own, and turnover alone won't confirm or rule any of them out — but they're reasonable prompts to look more closely at your filter and flow, alongside testing your water.
- Detectable ammonia or nitrite in an established, stocked tank. Test to confirm before assuming a filtration cause — see our ammonia and nitrite guides.
- Persistent cloudiness or debris that never seems to clear. Could point to mechanical media that's overdue for cleaning, or flow that isn't reaching parts of the tank — see our cloudy water guide.
- Visible flow that's dropped off noticeably since setup. Often a sign the filter needs cleaning rather than replacing.
- Obvious stagnant areas where waste or debris consistently collects and doesn't get picked up by any current.

A high turnover with poor media or bad flow distribution can filter worse than a lower turnover with well-maintained media and good circulation.
