Why is my fish flashing or rubbing against objects?

Flashing — a quick, twisting scrape of the body or fins against gravel, décor, plants or the glass — is a fish's way of responding to something it finds irritating against its skin or gills. That irritation can come from ammonia, nitrite, chlorine or a sudden shift in pH or temperature, or from an external parasite attached to the skin or gills. The behaviour itself looks the same regardless of which it is, so flashing alone doesn't prove parasites are involved. Understanding flashing

Flashing describes a fish darting against a surface — gravel, rockwork, plant leaves or the glass — in a quick scraping or twisting motion, sometimes exposing its paler underside briefly as it turns. It's an irritation response: something is bothering the fish's skin, fins or gills, and rubbing against a firm surface is the direct way it can address that itch or discomfort.

A single flash from one fish, seen once, is common and often means very little on its own. Repeated flashing from the same fish over a few hours, or several fish flashing around the same time, is the pattern worth paying attention to — it points toward a shared cause worth investigating rather than an isolated moment.

Likely causes

Water-quality related:

  • Chlorine or chloramine from unconditioned tap water. These disinfectants are added specifically to kill microorganisms and irritate fish skin and gills in the same way if tap water is added without a suitable conditioner[2].

Other possible causes:

  • External parasites. Protozoan parasites and monogenean flukes attaching to skin or gills are a well-documented cause of flashing, sometimes alongside gasping, lethargy or reduced appetite[1].

  • General skin or gill irritation from non-living sources. Fine airborne particles, recently added substances, or residue from an uncured new ornament can all irritate skin without any parasite being involved.
  • Physical irritation from sharp or abrasive décor. Rough rockwork or broken ornaments can prompt a fish to rub against smoother nearby surfaces instead, or cause genuine minor injury with repeated contact.

Test before assuming a cause

  1. Test ammonia, nitrite and pH

    These are quick to test and rule out, and are a more common explanation than parasites for occasional or early flashing.

  2. Check temperature for a recent change

    Confirm your heater and thermometer agree, and that nothing has shifted suddenly.

  3. Think back to your last water change

    Confirm a suitable conditioner was used on any tap water added, and check the label matches what your water supplier actually uses.

Look closer at the fish

  1. Inspect the body, fins and gills without netting the fish unnecessarily

    Look for spots, redness, cloudiness, patches or visible damage from a comfortable distance before deciding further handling is needed.

  2. Check whether more than one fish is affected

    Several fish flashing points more toward a shared tank-wide cause — water chemistry or a spreading parasite — than a single fish's individual irritation.

What to check next

If water tests come back normal and flashing continues, work through this checklist:

  • Is any décor sharp, broken, or recently added without being rinsed or cured first?
  • Are other signs appearing alongside flashing — visible spots, gasping, clamped fins, lethargy or appetite loss?
  • Has anything new been introduced recently — fish, plants, substrate or equipment moved between tanks without quarantine?
  • Is flashing increasing in frequency or spreading to more fish over a day or two?

Seek specialist help if: flashing is frequent and affects several fish at once with normal water test results; it's combined with visible spots, patches, gasping, clamped fins or lethargy; or the pattern is clearly worsening over a day or two rather than settling.
