RO/DI water for aquariums: what it is and when you actually need it
RO/DI stands for reverse osmosis/deionisation — a two-stage purification process that strips tap water down to close to pure H₂O, removing dissolved minerals, chlorine and chloramine, heavy metals and most other contaminants along with them[1]. Whether you actually need it depends heavily on what you're keeping: it's close to mandatory for reef tanks, genuinely useful for soft-water species and heavily planted tanks, and unnecessary for most ordinary community freshwater setups where a dechlorinator does the job. The one thing that's true regardless of your setup: pure RO/DI water is not safe to add directly to a tank on its own, and needs remineralising or turning into saltwater first.
What RO/DI water actually is
Reverse osmosis pushes tap water through a semi-permeable membrane fine enough that water molecules pass through while dissolved salts, minerals and most other contaminants are largely rejected and flushed away[1]. That alone removes the great majority of what's dissolved in typical tap water. The deionisation (DI) stage that follows runs the water through a resin that captures the small remainder of dissolved ions the membrane doesn't catch, producing water that's close to chemically pure — essentially no measurable hardness, alkalinity or dissolved solids left in it. RO water on its own (without the DI stage) is already very low in dissolved minerals; RO/DI goes a step further, which matters more for reef tanks than for most freshwater setups, since reef livestock tends to be the least tolerant of trace contaminants.
Do you actually need it?

If your tap water tests poorly for the parameter that actually matters for your livestock — high phosphate for a reef tank, high GH for a soft-water species — that's a stronger reason to invest in RO/DI than any blanket rule[2]. Why pure RO/DI water isn't safe on its own
This is the single most important thing to understand about RO/DI water: producing it is only the first step. Freshwater and marine setups solve the "now what" problem differently, covered in the next two sections.
Freshwater: remineralising or blending
For a freshwater tank, pure RO/DI water needs minerals put back in before it's safe to use, either with a commercial remineralising product formulated for aquarium use, or by blending it back with a portion of your own tap water rather than using it 100% pure. Marine and reef: starting from a clean baseline
Marine and reef keepers generally take a different route: RO/DI water is used at close to full purity as the base for mixing marine salt, rather than blended with tap water first. Getting RO/DI water: unit vs pre-made
A dedicated RO/DI unit plumbed into your home's water supply is the standard approach for anyone using significant volumes regularly — ongoing marine/reef top-offs and water changes, or a larger planted tank needing frequent water changes. For occasional or small-scale use, pre-made RO or RO/DI water from a local fish shop, or distilled water from a general retailer, avoids the upfront cost of a unit at the expense of needing to transport and store it yourself. Whichever route you take, check the actual output reading of the water you're using rather than assuming it's zero — a poorly maintained or aging RO/DI unit can pass through more than it should, and that reading matters for both remineralising and blending calculations.
Common mistakes
- Adding pure RO/DI water straight to a stocked tank without remineralising it first, risking an unstable pH and mineral-deficient water.
- Assuming every tank needs RO/DI water when tap water with a dechlorinator is perfectly adequate for most common community freshwater fish.
- Confusing RO/DI water top-offs with saltwater top-offs in a marine tank — only the water evaporates, not the dissolved salt, so topping up evaporation with plain RO/DI water (not pre-mixed saltwater) is actually correct, and using saltwater for a top-off gradually pushes salinity upward instead.
- Never testing an RO/DI unit's actual output, assuming it reads zero when an ageing membrane or exhausted DI resin may be passing more through than expected.
- Buying an RO/DI unit before checking whether your actual problem needs one — test your tap water and your target livestock's real requirements first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add fish straight to pure RO/DI water?
No. Pure RO/DI water has essentially no dissolved minerals and no buffering capacity, which means its pH can swing unpredictably and it lacks the calcium, magnesium and other minerals fish need for basic physiological processes. It needs remineralising for freshwater use, or turning into saltwater with a marine salt mix for marine use, before any livestock goes in — never used straight from the unit.
Is RO water and RO/DI water the same thing?
Related but not identical. RO (reverse osmosis) water has passed through a membrane that removes most dissolved solids. RO/DI water has gone through that same membrane and then a deionising resin stage afterward, removing the small remainder the membrane alone leaves behind. RO/DI is the more thorough of the two and is generally what reef keepers specifically mean when they say RO/DI, since reef tanks are typically the least tolerant of trace contaminants.
Do I need to buy an RO/DI unit, or can I use bottled water?
Either can work in principle, but cost and convenience usually decide it. Buying pre-made RO or RO/DI water, or distilled water, is a reasonable option for a small tank or occasional top-offs. For a larger tank, frequent water changes, or ongoing marine/reef use, an RO/DI unit at home is typically far cheaper over time despite the upfront cost, and removes the need to transport and store large volumes of purchased water.
