African butterflyfish care: what it needs and which warning signs matter
Pantodon buchholzi, the African butterflyfish, is a specialised surface-dwelling, obligate air-breathing predator built to ambush insects from beneath still or slow-moving water. Its needs centre on surface area rather than depth, a secure cover, calm water, and food delivered where it actually feeds — not on a fixed tank-size number. This guide focuses on whether your aquarium can meet those needs and which behaviour changes are actually worth checking, not a generic species fact-sheet.
Before adding an African butterflyfish
May be suitable when…
You have a wide, calm-surfaced tank with a genuinely secure, tight-fitting lid, floating cover, and tankmates too large to be eaten and not prone to nipping fins or competing aggressively for surface food.
Reconsider when…
Your tank has strong surface agitation, a loose-fitting or gapped lid, small enough tankmates to be considered prey, or other fast surface feeders it would have to compete against for food.
Worth knowing: surface area, cover and calm water matter more here than a single tank-size or "inches per gallon" figure.
Identification and naming caveats
Pantodon buchholzi Peters, 1877 is the sole living member of the family Pantodontidae[1], within the order Osteoglossiformes — a genuinely distinct evolutionary lineage, not a close relative of any common tankmate. Unlike this pilot format's other species page, taxonomic identification here isn't in dispute: the scientific name and classification are well established[2].
The naming caveat that does matter is the common name itself. "Butterflyfish" is also used for an entirely unrelated group of marine reef fish, family Chaetodontidae. Pantodon buchholzi is a freshwater fish from West and Central Africa and has no close relationship to those marine species[2] — advice, tankmates or care information written for marine "butterflyfish" doesn't apply here.
The aquarium conditions that matter most
In the wild this species inhabits swamps, creeks, backwaters and the calmer parts of rivers across the Niger, Congo and Chad basins and nearby West/Central African drainages[1] — still or slow-moving water beneath dense overhanging or floating vegetation. Specialist hobbyist sources report parameters broadly consistent with that habitat:

Space, layout and habitat needs
We won't state a universal minimum tank size or a specific footprint figure — the only number we found for that came from a single hobbyist source, not a biological study, and this species' needs don't map cleanly onto a volume figure regardless. What actually matters, and is consistently emphasised across both biological and specialist sources, is what the aquarium physically provides, not what it holds in litres:
- Usable surface area. This is a surface-dwelling fish that spends the great majority of its time in the top few centimetres of water[1], so a wide, shallow footprint offers it more usable habitat than a tall, narrow tank holding the same volume — footprint matters more than depth or overall gallonage.
- A secure, gap-free cover. Not optional. This species is a powerful jumper, capable of leaping clear of the water to catch prey or escape a perceived threat[1], and hobbyist reports describe fish escaping through gaps as small as a few centimetres[4]. Check any gap around filter pipes, heaters or cables — each is a realistic escape route.
- Calm surface conditions. Keep water movement and surface agitation minimal — this fish inhabits still or slow-moving swamps, creeks and backwaters in the wild[1], and both specialist sources reviewed for this guide independently describe strong flow as a source of stress[3][4].
- Surface shelter or vegetation. Dim lighting and floating plants or other surface cover are commonly recommended, both to diffuse light and to let the fish exhibit its natural habit of holding position beneath cover[3].
- Sensible clearance beneath the lid. Given how forcefully this species can jump, avoid positioning hard décor, equipment or a very close-fitting internal cover immediately above the water where a startled fish could strike it — the goal is a secure barrier at the top of the tank, not an obstacle course just beneath the surface.
- Room to feed without constant competition. Enough surface area and, where kept in a small group, enough space that individuals aren't permanently competing for the same feeding spot (see "Feeding" and "Social and compatibility considerations" below).
Feeding behaviour and diet acceptance
This is an exophageous, surface-oriented insectivore/piscivore in the wild, taking terrestrial insects that fall onto the water, aquatic insect larvae and nymphs, and small crustaceans or fish[1]. Its upward-facing mouth is specialised for feeding at the surface, and it will not reliably chase food that sinks below its feeding zone — food that passes below the surface layer is effectively lost to this fish, not "grazed later."
In the aquarium, most individuals accept live foods (crickets, fruit flies, mealworms) readily, and can often be trained onto frozen bloodworm or similar over a couple of weeks; some will take floating flake, but this shouldn't form the bulk of the diet[3][4]. Feed at the surface, in small amounts more than once a day rather than one large feeding, and watch each individual actually take food rather than assuming a fed tank means a fed fish.
Competition from faster surface feeders is a specific, well-documented risk, not just a general compatibility concern: pairing this species with other fast surface feeders (hatchetfish and halfbeaks are specifically mentioned) can trigger aggression over food, on top of simply outcompeting it for the food itself[4].
Social and compatibility considerations
Compatibility here isn't just a question of temperament — it's largely a question of size and layer. This species "will eat any fish it can fit in its mouth"[3], so small tankmates aren't at risk because of aggression, they're at risk of being eaten; size tankmates to be clearly too large to swallow, not just "peaceful." It can also be aggressive toward other surface-dwelling species, both from territorial behaviour and the feeding competition described above, and its trailing fins make it vulnerable to fin-nipping tankmates[3].
Reported African tankmates that share its calm-water preference include Congo tetras, elephantnose fish, Synodontis catfish, African knifefish, Ctenopoma species and peaceful West African cichlids[3] — all mid-water or bottom-dwelling, avoiding direct surface competition. Groups of conspecifics can reportedly work in a roomy tank with plenty of surface vegetation, but individuals can be aggressive toward each other in cramped conditions[3]. Water stability considerations
As an obligate air-breather, this species must be able to reach the surface at all times[1] — anything that restricts surface access (extremely low water level, excessive floating cover with no gaps, aggressive tankmates blocking the surface) is a more acute welfare concern for this fish than it would be for a purely gill-breathing species. Sudden increases in flow or surface agitation (a new filter, a powerhead, topping up water level too vigorously) are repeatedly described as a source of stress and behavioural change[3][4], so introduce any equipment change gradually and observe the fish's response rather than assuming it will adjust immediately.

Normal behaviour
- Remaining near the surface for the great majority of its time, rather than exploring the whole water column.
- Holding a fairly fixed position beneath floating plants or other surface cover, often for extended periods.
- Watching or striking upward at food introduced from above, using its upward-facing mouth.
- Occasional visits to the surface specifically to breathe air, distinct from normal surface-holding[1].
- Startle responses and jumping when threatened or occasionally when hunting — FishBase describes it as "a ballistic jumper" rather than a true glider, capable of considerable leaps[1].
None of this is abnormal. Surface-dwelling and air-breathing are the species' normal biology, not signs of a problem — the warning signs below are about departures from this pattern, not the pattern itself.
Warning signs and what to check first
None of the signs below confirms a specific diagnosis. Each has more than one plausible explanation, and this species is specifically reported to mask illness until it's fairly advanced[4] — so early, careful checking matters more than waiting to see if something resolves on its own.
Refusing surface food

Behavioural alternatives: Try live food (crickets, fruit flies) before assuming outright refusal, since this species can be selective about food type and movement.

Persistent hiding combined with not feeding
What it may indicate: A more serious stress or health problem than hiding alone.

Behavioural alternatives: Brief hiding after a tank disturbance or new introduction is normal; the combination with not feeding over multiple days is the concerning pattern.
Relevant water tests: Full water-quality panel (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH).
When specialist assessment may be needed: If both hiding and appetite loss continue for more than a few days.
Difficulty maintaining position at the surface
What it may indicate: Weakness, swim-bladder or buoyancy issues, or fin damage affecting its ability to hold position.
Environmental causes to check: Excess flow or turbulence disrupting the surface layer.
Behavioural alternatives: Brief repositioning after being startled is normal; persistent difficulty is not.
Relevant water tests: Ammonia, nitrite, temperature stability.
When specialist assessment may be needed: If the fish cannot maintain surface position consistently, given how central surface access is to this species' respiration.
Abnormal sinking
What it may indicate: A genuine health concern — healthy individuals rarely leave the surface for long[4].
Environmental causes to check: Being outcompeted or harassed away from the surface by tankmates.
Behavioural alternatives: Occasional brief dives are not typical of this species and shouldn't be assumed harmless without checking further.

Laboured or unusually frequent respiration

Behavioural alternatives: None — this is a physical-injury sign, not a behavioural variant.

Repeated collisions with the lid
What it may indicate: A startle response with insufficient warning, a lid sitting too close to the water surface, or a nearby disturbance triggering repeated jumps.
Environmental causes to check: Sudden lighting changes, vibration, tapping on the glass, or a new source of movement outside the tank.
Behavioural alternatives: An occasional startle jump is normal; repeated collisions suggest an ongoing trigger worth identifying.
Relevant water tests: Not directly relevant, but check general water quality if collisions coincide with other signs.

Harassment by tankmates
What it may indicate: Incompatible surface-feeding competition, fin-nipping, or general aggression.
Environmental causes to check: Recently added surface feeders, insufficient surface space for the number of fish present.
Behavioural alternatives: Occasional territorial disputes among conspecifics in a roomy tank may resolve on their own; sustained harassment from another species usually doesn't.

Weight loss
What it may indicate: Inadequate feeding (including food passing below its feeding zone), competition from tankmates, parasites, or illness.

Behavioural alternatives: Observe an individual feeding directly rather than assuming the group is fed adequately.

Sudden behavioural change after increased flow or surface agitation
What it may indicate: A direct stress response to an environmental change this species is specifically reported to be sensitive to[3][4].
Environmental causes to check: Recent filter, powerhead or top-up changes affecting surface movement.
Behavioural alternatives: Reduce flow/agitation back toward previous levels and observe whether behaviour normalises before assuming illness.
Relevant water tests: Ammonia, nitrite (a new filter can also indicate a cycling change).
When specialist assessment may be needed: If behaviour doesn't normalise after flow is reduced and water quality is confirmed stable.
Common husbandry mistakes
- Choosing a tall, narrow tank for its stated litre capacity, rather than prioritising a wide surface footprint.
- An insecure or gapped lid, given how capable a jumper this species is.
- Keeping it with other fast surface feeders, triggering food-competition aggression.
- Keeping small enough tankmates that they become prey, rather than assessing compatibility on size alone.
- Running strong filtration flow or heavy surface agitation in a species adapted to still water.
- Only feeding sinking foods, or feeding once and assuming every individual has eaten.
- Skipping quarantine or a gradual acclimation period for a species reported to mask illness until advanced.
What the aquarium cannot compensate for
- A large water volume cannot make up for a narrow surface footprint — this fish lives at the surface, not throughout the water column.
- Good water quality cannot compensate for an insecure lid; a single jump can be fatal regardless of how well the tank is otherwise run.
- Calm water elsewhere in the tank cannot offset a filter outlet or powerhead disturbing the surface layer specifically.
- No amount of stocking care fully removes the size-based predation risk this species poses to small tankmates.
