Blueberry snail care: the species science hasn't identified
No taxonomic authority has ever formally identified the "blueberry snail" down to species, or even confirmed its genus. It's sold worldwide under the placeholder label Viviparus sp., and retailers commonly say it comes from Papua, Indonesia, but that's a trade claim, not a distribution recorded in any taxonomic database we could find. Most of what's published about keeping it comes from sellers and hobbyist reports rather than species-level research. That gap matters for how you read the rest of this guide: what's confirmed, what's reported and what's our own cautious inference are kept separate throughout, rather than presented as one settled picture.

Identification and naming caveats
Reported by the trade, not confirmed in taxonomic literature: aquarium-trade sources describe this animal as collected from Papua, Indonesia[1][2]. Treat that as the origin reported by sellers, not as a scientifically documented natural distribution. We found no taxonomic catalogue, museum record or peer-reviewed description tying a formally named species to this specific animal, so there's nothing yet to independently confirm exactly where its wild population lives or how it's delimited from related snails. It's almost universally sold under the placeholder label Viviparus sp.[1][2] (genus assigned, species left undetermined), and at least one specialist European retailer avoids even that, describing it instead as a "still undetermined lidded snail" within Viviparidae[2].
What authoritative taxonomic sources actually show: rather than relying on Wikipedia or the trade listings themselves for the genus question, we checked MolluscaBase (the standard reference database for mollusc taxonomy) and GBIF (the Global Biodiversity Information Facility's occurrence and species catalogue). MolluscaBase places Viviparus in the subfamily Viviparinae within Viviparidae, a family it lists as roughly 150 species across some 31 genera in three subfamilies[3]. Every species GBIF catalogues under Viviparus is from Europe, temperate West Asia, or (in one case, V. georgianus) the southeastern United States[4]; none is catalogued from Indonesia, New Guinea, or anywhere in Southeast Asia. A dedicated, peer-reviewed distribution study of the genus reaches the same picture, mapping its modern range through European and West Asian water bodies specifically[5].
What this does and doesn't tell us: it doesn't prove the trade's genus label is wrong. Absence of a documented record isn't the same as evidence of absence, and Viviparidae as a family is diverse in Southeast Asia and Australia, with other genera existing much closer to where this animal is reported to come from. Notopala, for example, is catalogued as native to northern and eastern Australia, not far from southern New Guinea[6]. But we could not find any authoritative source (catalogue, museum collection, or peer-reviewed description) formally connecting Notopala, any other named genus, or any described species at all, to the animal sold as "blueberry snail." So while the Viviparus label looks like a provisional placeholder rather than a resolved identification, we're not in a position to assign a more correct genus ourselves, because that evidence doesn't yet appear to exist publicly. If a peer-reviewed source resolves this, we'd like to know, and we'll update this page.
What we can say with confidence: this animal is a member of family Viviparidae, a large group of livebearing, gilled freshwater snails found through Europe, Asia, Africa and North America[7]. Its genus, species, natural range and formal taxonomic status remain unresolved in the sources available to us. Almost everything published about keeping it day-to-day (temperature, water chemistry, feeding) comes from sellers and hobbyist observation of the traded animal itself, not from species-level scientific study. The aquarium conditions that matter most

Space, layout and habitat needs
Sellers commonly suggest a minimum of around 10–15 US gallons (roughly 40–55 litres) for a small group, though we treat this as a trade recommendation rather than a scientifically established minimum. What matters more than the exact volume is that the tank is established, not newly set up: this animal appears to depend heavily on suspended organic particles and biofilm that only build up once a tank has been running for a while (see "Feeding" below), so a freshly cycled tank with sparse biofilm is a poor starting environment even if the water chemistry itself is otherwise suitable.
A reasonable amount of surface area for biofilm to develop — décor, glass, hardscape — and gentle to moderate water flow that keeps some organic particles in suspension without being forceful, are both consistent with the filter-feeding biology described for this family[7]. Sellers describe it as harmless to live plants.
Feeding behaviour and how to tell whether it is actually eating
This is one of the clearer points of disagreement between sources, and it matters for welfare, not just interest. Viviparidae as a family are gilled filter feeders: their gill filaments trap suspended particles in mucus and cilia, which are then carried to the mouth, and respiration and filter-feeding are physically linked in the same organ[8]. Some trade sources describe the blueberry snail specifically as reliant on this mechanism, stating that biofilm and algae alone are not sufficient and that a suspended, powdered food needs to be dosed into the water column regularly[1][2]. We can't resolve which description is more accurate for this specific animal from the sources available. What we'd suggest instead: don't assume either model, and watch the animal itself. A snail that's feeding normally will typically show some visible response when a fine, suspended food is introduced near it — subtle movement of the gill/mantle area, orientation toward the food, or reduced activity elsewhere while feeding. A snail that shows no feeding response to suspended food over repeated attempts, isn't visibly rasping at surfaces either, and is losing body condition, may be failing to feed regardless of which model is correct — and gradual starvation is a real, underappreciated risk for a specialised filter-feeding animal kept as if it were a generic algae-eating snail.
Regardless of which feeding strategy dominates, biofilm alone in a young, sparsely established tank is unlikely to be sufficient — this is one of the clearer reasons this animal suits a mature aquarium more than a new one.
Social and compatibility considerations
Sellers describe this snail as peaceful and generally compatible with most community fish and plants. Compatibility isn't only about temperament, though: consider whether tankmates might physically damage a slow-moving, largely stationary animal (fin-nippers aren't a direct threat to a snail, but boisterous bottom-dwelling or substrate-disturbing species can repeatedly dislodge or stress it), and whether any tankmate is likely to prey on very small newborn snails, given this species gives birth to fully formed but small live young rather than laying eggs[1][2]. Reproduction is reported as slow — roughly one to three young every two to four weeks per source[1][9] — so overpopulation isn't a realistic concern, but new arrivals are vulnerable while very small.
Keeping more than one is reasonable if you want to observe natural behaviour or eventually see reproduction, since sources describe the family as non-hermaphroditic, requiring both a male and female (reportedly distinguishable in mature animals by antenna thickness) to produce young[1]. Water stability considerations
As an invertebrate, this snail is likely to be considerably more sensitive to copper than most fish — most aquatic invertebrates are, and copper-based medications are known to harm them at concentrations well below what's used to treat some fish parasites[10]. Avoid copper-containing treatments in any tank holding this animal, and be cautious about adding it to a tank where copper has been used recently, even if levels have since tested at zero, since copper can re-release from substrates and décor if water chemistry changes[10].
Because it depends on stable water chemistry and an established biofilm, avoid adding this snail to a tank that is still cycling or that has recently shown signs of a cycle disruption. Sudden ammonia or nitrite exposure is a welfare risk for any livestock, and a snail showing no obvious external injury can still be affected by water-quality problems that a fish might tolerate better or worse — there's no reliable evidence either way for this specific animal, so treat water-quality events as seriously for this snail as for your fish.
Normal behaviour
- Slow, largely stationary movement across surfaces, with periods of remaining in one place for extended stretches — this is normal for the family, not automatically a sign of illness.

Warning signs and what to check first
None of the signs below confirms a specific problem on its own. Each has more than one possible explanation, and reacting immediately — especially by adding a product or a large water change — before checking the more likely causes can make things worse.
Remaining closed or withdrawn for an unusually prolonged period
What it might mean: Stress, a recent disturbance, unsuitable water chemistry, or the snail may simply be resting — this family is capable of extended inactivity.
What else could explain it: A recent water change, house-hold noise or vibration, a change in lighting, or handling.
Check this first: Recent tank events, current temperature and pH against your own baseline, and whether it responds at all to gentle water movement nearby.
Don't: Prise the shell open or handle it repeatedly to "check" — this is more likely to add stress than resolve anything.
Repeatedly falling or failing to right itself
What it might mean: Weakness, an unsuitable or slippery surface, or a genuine health problem.
What else could explain it: Strong water flow dislodging it, or an awkward decor surface it can't get purchase on.
Check this first: Flow rate near where it's settled, and whether it can right itself if gently (once) placed foot-down on a flatter surface.
Don't: Assume it's dying and remove it immediately — check flow and substrate first.
Shell erosion, pitting or cracking
What it might mean: Insufficient calcium or mineral content in the water, or low pH failing to support shell maintenance.
What else could explain it: Physical damage from décor, handling, or another animal in the tank.
Check this first: General hardness and pH, and whether erosion is new or was already present when purchased — sellers note that wild-collected animals sometimes arrive with pre-existing shell wear.
Don't: Assume a supplement alone will reverse existing damage — it may help prevent further erosion, but existing shell damage doesn't reliably repair.
Reduced movement compared with its established pattern
What it might mean: A genuine decline, or simply normal variation for an animal that's already relatively inactive.
What else could explain it: Temperature drop (slows activity in most ectotherms), a recent change in tankmates, or a shift in feeding routine.
Check this first: Temperature stability and how long the change has actually persisted, rather than judging from a single day.
Don't: Compare it to how active a different individual or species is — use its own established pattern as the baseline.
Failure to graze or feed
What it might mean: Given the disagreement over feeding strategy (see "Feeding" above), this could mean insufficient suspended food, insufficient biofilm, or a health problem unrelated to feeding.
What else could explain it: Recently fed and temporarily inactive, or simply positioned somewhere you can't easily observe feeding.
Check this first: Whether you're offering both a suspended fine food and allowing biofilm to establish, and whether body condition (fullness, shell weight relative to size) is declining over weeks, not days.
Don't: Assume a new tank's algae and leftover flake alone will sustain it — that's one of the more common ways this animal is reported to gradually decline.
Unusual tissue retraction or deterioration
What it might mean: A more serious health problem, potentially advanced.
What else could explain it: Normal retraction into the shell if disturbed shortly before observation.
Check this first: Whether tissue looks different (discoloured, receding, an odour) from its own normal appearance over several checks, not a single glance.

Sudden inactivity after a water change, medication or chemical addition

Multiple snails changing behaviour at once
What it might mean: A shared environmental cause — water quality, temperature, or something added to the whole tank — is more likely than coincidence when several animals change at the same time.
What else could explain it: A shared recent event, like a water change or new décor, that affected all of them similarly without being harmful.
Check this first: Ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature across the whole tank, and whether fish or other livestock are also showing any change.
Don't: Treat each snail as an isolated case if several changed together — look at the tank as a whole first.
Common husbandry mistakes
- Adding it to a newly set-up tank, before biofilm and stable water chemistry have had time to establish.
- Treating it as a generic algae-eating "clean-up crew" snail, without offering a suspended fine food, given the genuine disagreement over how much it relies on filter feeding.
- Using copper-based medication anywhere in the same system.
- Buying on a "beginner-friendly" or "easy" label alone, without checking whether your specific tank is mature enough and your water chemistry suits it — see "Is this really beginner-friendly?" below.
- Assuming wild-collected stock is as robust as captive-bred stock — at least one specialist retailer states no established captive-bred supply currently exists for this animal, so allow extra care and observation time after purchase.
- Reacting to a single day's inactivity as an emergency, given how inactive this family can normally be.
What the aquarium cannot compensate for
- An aquarium cannot make up for a tank that isn't yet established — biofilm and suspended organic particles build up over time, not on demand.
- Good water chemistry cannot compensate for the wrong feeding approach if the disagreement over its feeding strategy means you're offering neither suspended food nor adequate grazing surface.
- No amount of water-quality management protects an invertebrate from a copper-based treatment used anywhere in the same system.
- The aquarium cannot restore a shell that has already eroded or cracked — only help prevent further damage going forward.
