Cloudy aquarium water: causes and what to do

Cloudy aquarium water isn't one single problem — the same word covers a harmless new-tank bacterial bloom, a light-driven algae bloom, tannin staining from driftwood, genuinely disturbed water quality, or, in a reef tank specifically, a completely different chemical process tied to calcium and alkalinity dosing rather than biology at all. You can't reliably tell which one you're looking at from appearance alone. In most freshwater cases, especially in a new or recently disturbed tank, it's a temporary bloom that clears within days as long as you don't make it worse. It's worth treating as urgent if it appears alongside gasping, laboured breathing, lethargy or livestock losses, or if ammonia or nitrite test positive. What "cloudy" actually covers

The main types of cloudy water

White or grey haze: bacterial bloom

An even, milky white or grey haze is most often a bacterial bloom — a rapid, temporary population increase in free-floating (rather than filter-dwelling) bacteria responding to a sudden supply of organic matter to break down. This is the type most associated with brand new tanks: as a tank cycles, the ammonia- and nitrite-oxidising bacteria that will eventually live in the filter and substrate are still establishing, and other bacteria can bloom in the water column in the meantime. It's also common after a big clean, a substrate disturbance, overfeeding, or something dead and decomposing unnoticed, all of which release organic material faster than usual. A related but distinct question is whether a cloudy new tank is also going through a genuine ammonia or nitrite spike as part of "new tank syndrome" — the period, commonly a few weeks, before the biological filter is fully established. The cloudiness itself doesn't confirm this either way: a very new tank can look cloudy from a harmless bacterial bloom while cycling perfectly normally underneath, and a tank can test positive for ammonia or nitrite while looking completely clear. Green water: free-floating algae

A green tint, sometimes described as "pea soup" in severe cases, is a bloom of free-floating single-celled algae rather than bacteria. It's driven mainly by light — too many hours of lighting, light that's too intense, or direct sunlight reaching the tank — usually combined with nutrients (nitrate, phosphate) being available for the algae to use. Brown or amber tint: tannins (not the same thing)

A brown, amber or tea-like colour is a different phenomenon from cloudiness altogether. It's caused by tannins and related humic substances leaching from driftwood, leaf litter, seed pods or other botanicals, and it colours the water without scattering light the way a genuine haze does — a tannin-stained tank still looks clear when you look directly through a thin layer of it. This staining isn't inherently a sign of poor water quality; it's common in deliberately set-up "blackwater" tanks and some evidence suggests the humic substances involved may have mild beneficial effects on stress and immune function in fish, though research specific to ornamental blackwater tanks is limited and most of what's known comes from broader aquaculture studies[4]. Gritty or drifting particles: suspended substrate and debris

Fine, gritty or visibly drifting particles, rather than an even haze, usually point to something mechanical: substrate or décor that was disturbed and hasn't fully settled, dust from new gravel or ornaments that wasn't rinsed before adding, or uneaten food and waste stirred up during maintenance. This type is generally the most straightforward to identify, since it's usually clearly tied to something that just happened, and it typically settles or filters out within hours to a couple of days without further action. Research on fish exposed to prolonged suspended sediment (mostly in wild and reef settings rather than aquaria) has linked it to gill irritation and structural change, which is one reason a persistent, heavier haze is worth addressing rather than leaving indefinitely, even when it isn't linked to a positive ammonia or nitrite reading[3].

Reef tanks: the "snowstorm" that isn't biological

A reef tank can still have a genuine bacterial bloom (during initial cycling, for instance) or disturbed-sand cloudiness just like a freshwater tank — the causes above aren't exclusively freshwater phenomena. But reef keepers also commonly describe a sudden white haze — often nicknamed a "snowstorm" — that the freshwater causes above don't explain at all: a chemistry event rather than a biological one. Seawater and reef aquarium water are normally supersaturated with calcium carbonate, meaning more of it is dissolved than plain chemistry would predict is stable, and that balance is what corals draw on to build their skeletons[5]. Push calcium and alkalinity (carbonate hardness) too high relative to each other, dose a high-pH buffer or kalkwasser too quickly, or let magnesium run low enough that it stops inhibiting calcium carbonate crystal growth, and that supersaturated calcium carbonate can precipitate out as fine white particles[5]. Worth knowing before assuming the worst: a brief, localised cloudy patch right at the point where you're actively dosing is a normal, usually harmless, and often self-resolving occurrence, not automatically a sign of a real imbalance — it's a sustained haze across the whole tank, or one that recurs repeatedly, that's worth investigating as a genuine precipitation event.

The practical response is different from every freshwater cause above: test calcium, alkalinity and magnesium rather than ammonia and nitrite first, since a marine biological filter handles the same nitrogen cycle as freshwater but precipitation events aren't connected to it. Observations vs. causes: what you can and can't tell by looking

It's worth being precise about what cloudy water is and isn't evidence of. That the water looks hazy, green or tinted is an observation. That it's "probably a bacterial bloom" or "probably algae" based on colour and timing is a reasonable working possibility, not a confirmed cause. The only things that confirm a cause are testing (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and where relevant checking recent light exposure or feeding) and, in some cases, time — a bloom that clears within a few days without intervention was very likely just that. Cloudy water on its own, however sudden or dramatic it looks, should never be treated as proof of a specific problem, and it shouldn't be treated as proof of safety either. What to do about cloudy water

Verify

  1. Note when it started and what changed recently

    A recent water change, a new light schedule, a gravel clean, new décor, or a feeding change all point toward a likely cause before you test anything.

  2. Test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate

    This is the only reliable way to know whether a genuine water-quality problem is present alongside the cloudiness, whatever it looks like.

Respond safely

  1. Pause or reduce feeding for a day or two

    Less uneaten food and waste means less organic matter feeding a bacterial bloom, and fewer nutrients available to algae.

  2. Increase surface agitation or aeration

    Both a bacterial bloom and a die-off of algae consume oxygen; extra surface movement helps keep livestock comfortable while things settle.

  3. Hold off on a large, sudden water change or an aggressive filter clean

  4. If ammonia or nitrite reads positive, treat it as the priority

  1. Reassess feeding and stocking

    Compare them against your tank's actual capacity, not just how much your fish will accept.

    Confirm flow hasn't dropped and that biological media hasn't been recently over-cleaned or exposed to untreated tap water.

  3. If it looks green, review lighting

    Reduce lighting duration or intensity and check for a direct sunlight source; persistent green water sometimes needs mechanical or UV intervention on top of this.

When cloudy water is an emergency

  • Don't reach for a water clarifier or flocculant as a first response without knowing the cause — it can make water look clear while an underlying ammonia, nitrite or bloom problem is still present. If you do use one, follow the manufacturer's instructions and keep testing anyway.
  • Avoid a very large, sudden water change or an aggressive scrub or replacement of filter media as an immediate reaction, particularly in a new tank — most nitrifying bacteria live on filter and substrate surfaces rather than in the water itself, and disturbing them heavily during a bloom can slow the tank's recovery rather than speed it up.   • Feed only what's eaten within a couple of minutes, and remove obvious leftovers.
