White fuzzy growth on fish: fungus or columnaris?
A white, cottony patch on a fish gets reached for the label "fungus" almost automatically — but a bacterial infection called columnaris, caused by Flavobacterium columnare, is capable of producing a very similar-looking growth, and it doesn't respond to antifungal treatment at all. Getting this distinction right matters more than usual: columnaris can progress fast, particularly in warm water, and treating it with the wrong category of product wastes time it may not be safe to lose. "Fungus" is used loosely in the hobby to describe almost any white, fluffy-looking growth, but true fungal infections in fish — most often Saprolegnia species — are a genuinely different organism from columnaris, which despite its cottony appearance is caused by the bacterium Flavobacterium columnare[1]. These are general patterns, not guaranteed rules — individual cases can look ambiguous, and a stressed, injured or immunocompromised fish can occasionally develop both at once. Where you're genuinely unsure, treating the water-quality and stress factors covered below immediately, while seeking a more confident identification, is safer than picking a product based on a guess.
Seeing fine white spots instead of a fuzzy patch?
Why either one takes hold
- Poor water quality or a recent water-quality swing. Both fungal and bacterial opportunists are more likely to take hold on a stressed fish.
- Existing injury or damage. A wound, a previous case of fin rot, or physical damage from handling or a tankmate gives either organism a foothold.
- New arrivals without quarantine. Introducing either organism from a new fish, plant or piece of equipment is a well-documented route into an established tank.
- Warmer water, specifically for columnaris. Progression is reported to be faster at higher temperatures, which is also worth factoring into any decision about raising temperature for an unrelated reason while this is present.

When isolation may help
Isolating an affected fish reduces the chance of other tankmates being exposed while you work out what's happening and lets you observe and, if needed, treat it without medicating fish that don't need it. This is particularly worth doing if columnaris is suspected, given how quickly it's reported to spread and progress. As with any isolation, keep the hospital tank's own water quality and cycling in mind — a small, uncycled container adds its own stress on top of the original problem.

- Avoid sudden temperature swings, particularly upward, given columnaris's reported acceleration in warmer water.

Will an antifungal treatment work on columnaris?
No. Columnaris is caused by a bacterium, Flavobacterium columnare, not a fungus, so antifungal medications aren't formulated to affect it and won't stop its progression. This is exactly why telling the two apart matters before treating — using the wrong category of product can let a fast-moving bacterial infection continue unchecked while you wait to see if it's working.
How fast does columnaris progress?
It can progress very quickly, especially in warmer water, with some sources describing fish deaths within 24 to 48 hours of visible symptoms in severe cases. That speed is one of the main reasons prompt, correct identification matters more here than with many other conditions — this isn't one where waiting a few days to see what happens is a low-risk option.
Are white spots on my fish Ich, fungus, or columnaris?
It depends on what the marks actually look like. Ich produces fine, uniform, salt-grain-sized dots; true fungal growth (Saprolegnia) typically forms raised, cotton-wool-like tufts, usually on an existing wound; columnaris more often looks like a flat, greyish-white film or patch, sometimes described as frost-like rather than tufted.
