Fin rot in aquarium fish: early signs, causes and what to do

A thin white or greyish line along a fin's edge, or fins that look ragged, frayed or shorter than they used to, is usually fin rot — an opportunistic bacterial infection that takes hold on already-stressed or damaged fin tissue rather than appearing out of nowhere in a healthy, well-kept tank. The encouraging part is that caught early, it's one of the more manageable things a fishkeeper can face, and fixing what let it take hold matters more than reaching for medication first. Frequently asked questions

Can fin rot heal on its own?

Sometimes, if the underlying cause is corrected early and the fish's own immune system gets ahead of it — a very early, barely-there whitening at the fin edge can stop progressing once water quality and stress are addressed. It's not something to rely on happening, though, and progression toward the fin base is a reason to act rather than wait and hope.

Is fin rot contagious to other fish?

The bacteria involved are opportunistic and often already present in a tank's water without causing problems in a healthy fish, so it isn't generally considered as directly contagious as something like Ich. That said, if the whole tank shares the same poor water quality or stress that let it take hold in one fish, other fish in that tank are working from the same disadvantage, which is why fixing tank-wide conditions matters as much as treating the individual.

Will fin rot damage grow back?

Often yes, once the infection is stopped and conditions improve, fin tissue can regenerate over subsequent weeks, though it doesn't always regrow perfectly symmetrical or exactly as before. Regrowth is also a genuinely useful sign that treatment is working — new, clear fin tissue extending past the previously damaged edge is one of the more reassuring things to look for.
