Discus care: why it's a tankmate mismatch, and how it feeds its fry

Discus (genus Symphysodon) are Amazonian cichlids that show up throughout this site as the standard example of a poor tankmate match — not because they're aggressive, but because they need warmer, softer water than almost anything sold as a typical "community fish," and a tall tank to suit their strongly laterally-compressed body shape. Beyond that reputation, they're genuinely distinctive for one specific reason: discus parents feed newly hatched fry with a nutrient-rich mucus secreted from their own skin, a form of parental care confirmed by peer-reviewed research and rare among fish generally.

You can maintain warm (28–30°C), soft, acidic water consistently, have a tall tank (at least 45cm/18in) with enough footprint for a small group, and are prepared to be selective about tankmates rather than dropping discus into an existing standard community tank.

You already have an established community tank running at typical tropical temperatures (around 24–26°C) and hard or neutral water, and were hoping to simply add discus to it. That mismatch is the single most common reason discus struggle in a new home, not a species defect.

Discus belong to the genus Symphysodon, native to the Amazon basin. In practice, the vast majority of discus sold in the aquarium trade are captive-bred, selectively line-bred for colour over many generations, and not meaningfully traceable to a single wild species — so a specific trade name ("red melon," "blue diamond") describes a colour strain, not a confirmed taxonomic identity.
