Freshwater vs saltwater aquarium: which should you start with?
Neither is universally "better" — they're different commitments, and the right starting point depends on your budget, how much research time you're genuinely willing to put in before buying anything, and what kind of tank you actually picture yourself maintaining in a year, not just setting up this month. Saltwater generally costs more up front, adds equipment and steps freshwater doesn't need, and gives you less room to recover from an early mistake. Freshwater is the cheaper, more forgiving entry point for most first-time keepers, without being "easier" in every respect. Saltwater may suit you better if…
You specifically want reef-keeping, corals or marine fish species that freshwater simply can't offer, you're comfortable with a higher initial and ongoing budget, and you're willing to research salinity management, rock curing and (for a reef tank specifically) supplement dosing before buying equipment rather than after.
