Acclimating and quarantining a new marine fish safely

A new marine fish needs two things a general quarantine setup doesn't fully cover on its own: a genuinely careful drip acclimation to match salinity and temperature before it ever touches your water, and a longer quarantine period than freshwater fish typically need, largely because of how Marine Ich's life cycle works. Have ready before acclimating…

A running, cycled quarantine tank matched to your display's temperature and salinity range, a refractometer or hydrometer, airline tubing for a drip line, and a container to acclimate in that isn't the fish's original shipping bag once it's been open a while.

Don't skip acclimation when…

You're tempted to float-and-dump because the fish "looks fine" in the bag — a fish showing no obvious distress in transport water can still be pushed into genuine shock by a fast salinity change on release.

Worth knowing: acclimation and quarantine solve different problems and both matter — acclimation protects against an abrupt water-chemistry shock in the first hour, quarantine protects your established tank from a hidden disease over the following weeks.

Why marine fish need a different approach

Freshwater and marine fish share the same basic acclimation principle — match your water to theirs gradually rather than dropping them straight in — but the stakes and the timeline differ. Drip acclimation, step by step

Set up

  1. Dim the lights and pour the fish, with its transport water, into a clean container

    Use a container that isn't the original bag once it's been sitting a while — ammonia can build up in a sealed bag over a long transport, and you don't want to trap the fish in that water any longer than necessary.

  2. Run an airline from your display or quarantine tank into the container

    A simple gate valve or a knot tied loosely in the line lets you control the drip rate. Aim for roughly two to four drips per second as a starting point.

Drip and monitor

  1. Let the water volume roughly double before you're done

    By the time you stop, the container should hold at least twice its starting volume, meaning the water is now closer to your tank's own chemistry than the fish's original transport water[2].

  2. Check salinity periodically as it drips

    A refractometer reading on the container partway through gives you a genuine sense of progress rather than guessing from time elapsed alone.

Release

  1. Net the fish into the tank; don't pour the transport water in with it

    The water it arrived in may carry ammonia, pathogens or medication residue from the supplier — net the fish across and discard the acclimation water rather than adding it to your tank.

How long acclimation should take

For a fish that's had a short, local trip from shop to home, roughly 20 to 30 minutes of dripping is generally considered adequate. For a fish that's travelled several hours — a longer shipment, or a multi-stop journey home — a longer drip of 30 minutes up to around 2 hours is more commonly recommended[2]. There's no single correct number of minutes; the actual goal is a genuinely gradual change in salinity and temperature, not a specific clock time, so use the doubled-volume guideline above as your real marker of progress rather than watching the clock alone.

Why marine quarantine runs longer

Once acclimated, a new marine fish still needs a genuine quarantine period before joining your display — and marine quarantine commonly runs longer than the equivalent freshwater recommendation. The main reason is Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans), whose life cycle includes a free-swimming stage that needs a host fish to survive; a fish-free tank held fallow for long enough starves any remaining parasites out between hosts. Can I skip quarantine for a captive-bred fish?

Not safely, no. Captive-bred stock is generally considered lower-risk than wild-caught, since it hasn't been through wild collection and the associated stress and exposure — but lower risk isn't no risk. It can still carry pathogens picked up during transport or at a retailer, or arrive stressed from shipping regardless of its origin. Treat captive-bred origin as one favourable factor, not a reason to skip quarantine altogether.
