Choosing aquarium shrimp: cherry, Amano and vampire shrimp compared
Cherry, Amano and vampire shrimp are routinely sold under the same "clean-up crew" label, as if any one of them would do the same job — they wouldn't. They're different genera with genuinely different feeding methods, breeding biology and water needs: cherry shrimp are small, easy-breeding grazers; Amano shrimp are larger grazers that can't establish a breeding population in an ordinary freshwater tank; vampire shrimp aren't grazers at all, but filter feeders that need strong, steady current to catch food from the water itself. Buying on the "shrimp" label alone, rather than which of these three you're actually getting, is one of the more common and avoidable stocking mistakes in the hobby.

Why "aquarium shrimp" isn't one thing
Retailers group cherry, Amano and vampire shrimp under the same broad "shrimp" or "clean-up crew" heading because all three are peaceful invertebrates that spend time cleaning up organic material in a tank. That's about where the similarity ends. Neocaridina davidi (cherry shrimp) and Caridina multidentata (Amano shrimp) are both grazers that pick food from surfaces, but belong to different genera with different breeding biology. Atya gabonensis (vampire shrimp) isn't a grazer at all — it's a filter feeder, using fan-shaped appendages to strain fine particles drifting past in moving water, a fundamentally different way of eating that changes almost everything about how it needs to be kept.
None of this makes any of the three difficult once you know what you're actually buying. It does mean that care advice genuinely written for one doesn't reliably transfer to another, despite how often they're marketed as interchangeable.

Which shrimp is right for your tank?
This is a starting point based on what each species actually needs, not a guarantee for your specific setup — check the linked guide for the species you're considering before buying.
- Want a first shrimp, or colourful display shrimp, in a normal planted community tank? Cherry shrimp are usually the more straightforward choice. Be ready for an ongoing population, and keep only one colour morph if you want it to stay that colour.
- Want algae control in a larger, established tank without worrying about a shrimp population explosion? Amano shrimp are commonly chosen for this. Buy at least four to six together rather than one or two, and plan to supplement their diet once the tank's natural algae is grazed down.
- Have a tank with strong, steady flow from a powerhead or filter outflow, and want a genuinely different-looking invertebrate? Vampire shrimp can work well here specifically, but are a poor fit for a calm, gently filtered planted tank where they simply won't get enough suspended food to survive.
- Not sure your tank can support any of them yet? All three need a tank that's already finished cycling, since sudden ammonia or nitrite exposure is a genuine welfare risk for any invertebrate and shrimp tend to show fewer obvious symptoms than fish before a problem becomes serious.
What every aquarium shrimp needs, regardless of species
A handful of welfare points apply to cherry, Amano and vampire shrimp equally, and to most other aquarium shrimp and invertebrates besides. These are worth knowing before keeping any of them, not just the species you eventually choose.
Copper is toxic to all of them
Copper-based medications, sometimes used to treat fish parasites, are toxic to shrimp and other invertebrates at concentrations used therapeutically for fish. Copper can also re-release from substrate or décor into the water even after tests read zero, so a tank that previously housed a copper-treated fish can remain unsafe for shrimp later. Treat this as an absolute line: never use a copper-based treatment anywhere in a system that houses, or will house, shrimp of any kind.
Moulting is normal, and a genuinely vulnerable time
All three species, like every crustacean, periodically shed and regrow their exoskeleton. Immediately afterward the new shell is soft and the shrimp is more vulnerable to predation, physical damage and poor water quality until it hardens. Increased hiding for a day or so before and after a moult is normal, not a sign of illness, and trying to physically assist a shrimp that appears stuck mid-moult is more likely to injure it than help. Leaving a shed exoskeleton in the tank rather than removing it lets shrimp graze the calcium back out of it, genuinely useful in softer water especially.
A cycled, stable tank matters more than it does for many fish
Shrimp are widely reported to show fewer obvious external symptoms than fish before a water-quality problem becomes serious, which is part of why avoiding a still-cycling tank, or one that's recently shown a cycle disruption, matters more than it might seem. Sudden ammonia or nitrite exposure is a genuine welfare risk for any invertebrate.
Predation risk depends on your other livestock, not the shrimp's temperament
All three species are peaceful and non-aggressive. The compatibility question that actually matters is whether anything else in the tank is large enough to view a shrimp as food — many cichlids, larger gouramis, and some barbs and loaches are a genuine predation risk, especially to a shrimp that's just moulted and temporarily soft-shelled. Common mistakes across all three
- Buying on the "shrimp" or "clean-up crew" label alone, without checking which of the three (or another species entirely) you're actually getting.
- Buying a vampire shrimp for a calm, gently filtered planted tank, where it has no way to get enough suspended food to survive.
- Buying Amano shrimp expecting them to prevent, rather than simply not cause, a shrimp population explosion — they don't breed successfully at home, but they also won't reduce a cherry shrimp population already present.
- Using a copper-based medication anywhere in a system that houses any of these species, including a shared filter or décor moved between tanks.
- Assuming general "shrimp-safe" water parameters cover every species, rather than checking each one's specific range.
- Adding any of the three to a tank that hasn't finished cycling, on the assumption that invertebrates are more forgiving of instability than fish.
Frequently asked questions
Which aquarium shrimp is easiest for a beginner?
Cherry shrimp, in most ordinary community and planted tanks. They tolerate a wider water-parameter range than many dedicated shrimp species, don't need special current or filter-feeding setup the way vampire shrimp do, and breed readily rather than needing brackish water like Amano shrimp — though that same easy breeding means you should expect a growing population, not a static number of shrimp.
Can I keep cherry, Amano and vampire shrimp together?
Generally yes from a temperament standpoint — all three are peaceful toward each other and toward most peaceful fish. The real question is whether your tank can meet all three sets of needs at once, particularly the strong, steady current a vampire shrimp needs to filter-feed, which cherry and Amano shrimp don't require and won't be harmed by either way. Check every species' own water-parameter range against the others before combining them, rather than assuming "shrimp are shrimp."
Is copper really that dangerous to all aquarium shrimp?
Yes, and this applies equally to cherry, Amano, vampire and effectively every other aquarium shrimp and invertebrate. Why do some aquarium shrimp breed easily while others never do?
It comes down to where the larvae develop. Cherry shrimp release fully formed miniature shrimp that need nothing but ordinary freshwater, so a growing population is the normal result of keeping both sexes together. Amano and vampire shrimp both have larvae that need brackish-to-marine water to survive, so a female carrying eggs at home is normal and healthy, but without a dedicated brackish rearing setup those eggs essentially never turn into surviving offspring.
Do all aquarium shrimp need the same water conditions?
No — the three species covered here overlap but aren't identical, and that's before considering other shrimp entirely, such as the soft, acidic water Caridina species like Crystal Red shrimp need compared with the harder water Neocaridina species like cherry shrimp tolerate well. Check the specific range for the species you're keeping rather than assuming one "shrimp-safe" target covers all of them.
